The Mexican War transfixed many Americans. It promised to change
the United States and its public life in significant ways. The addition
of Mexican territory in the West would open up new lands for settlement,
a long-time Democratic goal. Most Whigs opposed the war, preferring
to settle and civilize the United States' existing territories more
intensively. While newspapers provided Americans with extensive coverage
of the war, broadside posters like this one provided more colorful documentation
of events.
