Lincoln's First Portrait
This is the first known portrait of Abraham Lincoln, taken in Washington in 1848. At this time Lincoln was a member of the United States Congress, where he proved a devoted opponent of the Mexican War. This position proved unpopular with Lincoln's Illinois constituents, and he returned to private life after a single term.
