273. David Turnham to William H. Herndon.

Dale Ind Oct 19th 1866

Friend Herndon

Yours of the 5th inst is at hand. Abe Lincoln was a Jackson man when he left here. turned whig in Illionoi. I wrote you this however in my last. The maiden name of Abe's Mother was Hanks. This Old Mr Sparrow married her Sister. Mr & Mrs Sparrow Died in Indiana and was buried on the Same ground that Mrs Lincoln (Abe's Mother) was buried on, Sometime afterward. Mr & Mrs Hanks the father & Mother of Mrs Lincoln never came to this State and of course did not die here.

Mr Hall & Wife [1] moved to Ill about the Same time that Lincoln did but what part of the State I do not know.

I was acquainted with Ben Romine. He was a farmer and lived on the River about Eighteen miles from Lincoln's He was an intelligent man, but I do not think he knew anything about Surveying. [2] and he and Abe Lincoln were not together a great deal I have no knowledge of Abe ever undertaking a Study with him. I do not think Abe ever Studied Surveying while he was here, but the Book you have may have been his.

Abe's Mother, Dennis Hanks' Mother & Mrs Sparrow were Sisters. This Hall married Dennis Hanks' Mother after he (Dennis) was born. They Surely moved away from here about the time the Lincolns did.

Yours Respectfully
David Turnham
