100. John T. Harris to William H. Herndon.

Harrisonburg, Va. Nov. 1st 1865.

Dear Sir:

After recovery from a long spell of illness I find your letter of the 25 Sept. & hasten to say so soon as I can learn accurately the facts desired by you from the "Oldest inhabitant" I will write you in full.

I Know all the Lincolns in this Country now living and I must rely on those much older than myself for correct information. I hope Mr. Shutt did not advise you to write to me on account of my age as being a cotemporary of the elder Lincolns (or as formerly pronounced here) Link-horns. Those I Know in this country are highly respectable & exceedingly stubborn people or such as are popularly denominated "bull-headed."

I think our records or those of Augusta will give the Wills & deeds of his Ancestors & might be of interest in your Book — I will make the examination, tho' a Gen'l by the name Hunter ^[1] burnt most of our records & I fear those with the rest.
