Dear Sir

Yours 1st Inst at hand. We never had any Debating Society at New Salem it may be possible that once and a while the community may have had publick Discussions in which Mr Lincoln participated

It is False sofar as to his walking to Vandaly if you will recollect or reflect for a minute you will Know better we had a regular Stage line from your place to Vandaly Lincoln borrowed $100. of Colman Smoot who now lives in this Co to get a suit of Clothes which cost him $60. leaving forty for Stage Fare &c &c I Know that I am correct. You are mistaken as to seeing any thing in Hollands book as coming from me I Know nothing of Holland or his book [1] I would like to see one I would carefully read it & note all Errors that I knew to be so
