562. Charles Friend to William H. Herndon.

Sonora Kentucky 17 July 1889

Dear Sir:

I would like to have a letter from you stating that I had assisted you in collecting the events of Pres — A Lincoln's early life, in Larue County, Ky. I was Post Master here and was kicked out by the Democrats when Pres Cleveland came into power. Made application and was indorsed by nearly all the Republicans here and in the District by the influential one. Was appointed 13 May, last and the Commission has been held up on account of a few lying Republicans and Democrats, I guess you have not forgotten me [My?] Uncle Dennis F. Hanks sent my letter to you and you wrote me, Uncle Dennis was a half brother of A Lincoln being a son of Nancy Hanks, ^[1] by Mr Grandfather Charles Friend, I know that you remember me after reading this, I think a word from you at this time would do me good and as I always responded to your calls you will help me.
