21. William Engle to William H. Herndon [1]

Sweetwater Ills. June 10th 1865.

Dear Sir,

Yours of the 5th inst. came duly to hand and contents noted.

In regard to the questions asked, touching our once mutual friend Abraham Lincoln. It will take me some time to get up dates and get things in shape. But in regard to boreing a hole in the bottom of the at boat, to let the water out, I am no witness in the case and know nothing about it. As for sewing up the hogs Eyes, I was not present but have seen them that were. I think I can get that up straight, and in a few weeks I will write you again, or come and see you. The President Mr. Lincoln has Eat and Drank and slept in my house, and I think I have some deeds of Surveys that he made me, that will assist me in dates. But should I never have the privilege of penning another line on the subject, I wish to say that through my long acquaintance with him, of near or quite forty years, his friendship was undying, it was eternal; always standing out in bold relief; it was truly friendship in marble and marble in Clay.

You will hear from me again, I think soon.

Give my love to your Father, those old acquaintance is dear to me.

Respectfully You[r]s
William Engles.
