446. Edgar Conkling to William H. Herndon [1].

Cincinnati O. July 31 1867.

Dr Sir

Yours of the 29th just recd. & am glad to know you appreciate my suggestions. In order that you may secure reliable information I will refer you to the attorney I referred to. Richard H. Collins, P.O. Box 90 North West Corner 4th & Main St this city. This precise address will prevent any other similar name getting your letter. He will at your request put you on the trail of important facts names &c. He is an old friend of Rev Dr Breckenridge and connected with Danville Review & well known in Ky. I cannot do more that this. I have shown him your letter & he thinks by your personal visits where Mr. Lincoln was born and learning the character & history of his real father you will find a solution of interesting questions as to the traits of Mr. L and who he inherited them from, whether from father or mother &c. I think you will learn that Mr. L. went to Ia near Richmond & was taught there by a Rev. Dr Monfort [2] a Prebytn Preacher now here & who says Mr. Lincoln manifested great taste for arithmetic. You must see by following up the early history of Mr L. at different points. Your history of him will embrace more facts & philosophy that will be sought for than any other history.

Very Respy
Edgar Conkling
