172. Robert Boal to William H. Herndon.

Peoria March 17th 1866

Dear Sir

I have delayed an answer to your letter of the 7th inst, that I might send you the result of my inquiries as to the fact of Douglas speaking at Princeton on the 17 or 18th oct 1854. [1] — I received to day a letter from Hon John H. Bryant, which places the matter beyond doubt, and fixes the time with accuracy — I enclose you the letter, which speaks for itself, and shows Conclusively that the agreement between Mr Lincoln & Judge Douglas to abandon the Canvass (of which your letter leaves me no doubt) was violated immediately afterward by Judge Douglas. I am glad to find my statements confirmed by so reliable an authority as Mr Bryant.

Yours truly
Robert Boal
