At Beaufort the capture of Fort McAllister is announced. The liability of its capture has been well understood. Sherman will now be able to get supplies by way of Oscabow Sound. Should he capture Savannah, it will have exchanged a city in the interior for a city on the coast, which has been completely closed to commerce since the loss of Fort Pulaski in 1862.
