Treat moved from New York to Springfield, where his success at the Sangamon County bar was so rapid that by 1839 he had been appointed to the bench of the Eighth Circuit. In 1841 he was appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court, where he sat until 1855, when he was appointed judge of the new federal district of southern Illinois. (DAB)
