Holland practiced medicine briefly and taught school but finally settled on literary pursuits. From 1850 to 1866 he was associated with the Springfield (Mass.) Republican. In 1869 Holland helped to establish Scribner's Monthly (later renamed Century Magazine), which he edited until his death. His admiring biography of AL, the first to be substantially researched, was published in 1866. (DAB)
