Born in Rockingham County, Virginia, Harrison came to Sangamon County with his parents in 1822. During the Black Hawk War he served with AL in a spy company and made the journey home to Sangamon County with him. Harrison later studied medicine in Springfield under Dr. Jacob M. Early and graduated in April 1840 from Rush Medical College in Pennsylvania, the second graduate of a medical college from Sangamon County. (HSC; Power; ISJ, September 3, 1873)
