Rockport Indiana Sept 4. 1866. My Dear Sir Your favor of a late date Enclosing a news-paper paragraph, and making inquiries in regard to a Miss Wood &c, came duly to hand. I have made diligent inquiry, and find there is nothing in the story. Old Mr Wood, at Elizabeth (whom you saw when there) has a daughter named Elizabeth, who is near Mr Lincoln's age and who knew and associated somewhat with Mr L. There never was a proposition of marriage made to her by L. though Mr L occasionally visited her. This Elizabeth Wood (still living in this Co') first married Samuel Hammond. Hammond died some years ago, and she married one Michael Trumper , who is still living and resides not far from Grandview in this Co.' Mrs Gentry , whom you also saw when here, says there is nothing in the story. I saw also Nathl and Redmond Grigsby, who state there is nothing in it. Command me at any time when I can serve you. We dont go "my policy" [1] "much" in these parts. Judge DeBruler is our Union Candidate for Congress in this Dist. This is Court week and I am quite hurried.
