[1865 66] Jno. T. Stuart Says We, in Sangamon Co. volunteered on the [blank space] day of April 1832 the day of our Cir Co went to Beardstown & rendezvoused there a few days went to Rushville and then organized into Companies and regiments Lincoln was Elected Captain at N.S We proceeded thence, packing provisions on our horses to Rock Island staid there a few days and then proceeded to Dixon were out of provisions bought some flour & whiskey of Dixon [1] when I got into camp the boys had a Spree proceeded to Ottowa thence by Gratiots Grove to Galena. The fight at Gratiots Grove Lincoln was not in Lincoln & myself were in Iles Spy Battallion Got to Galena went to the hoar houses Gen Henry went his magnetism drew all the women to himself All went purely for fun devilment nothing Else At Ottow we beat up for volunteers Lincoln & I belonged to ________ 3. Companies Constituted a Spy battallion I was a member of the Spy battallion before I landed at Dixon Was in Dawson's Company Spy battallion called Henry Commanded the Spy battallion At Ottow we we called for a regiment for 20 days joined Early's Company of the Spy battallion : First under Iles as Captain Commanded by Henry & 2dly under Dawson. Lincoln was in these Spy Companies Our provisions were brought to us at Beardstown by steam boat loaded our horses her landed at Rock River met boats got provisions struck for Dixon Carried Some provisions on horse back boats perogues &c &c met up as often as possible SEE.
