139. Richard G. Oglesby to William H. Herndon.

Springfield Feb 5th 1866

My Dear Sir

I have gone patiently I may say critically over your last Lecture. It does not seem so good as the first only I suppose — I am able to give no better reason — because it was not first read. It seems to me beyond Question that in your anxiety to do Justice to the character the Life and fame of Mr Lincoln you divest yourself of all partiality and prejudice and enter into the very Sinews Nerves and raines of all there was of him and unravel hold up and expose. Each so faithfully and faultlessly all must confess you have done a good work for history and mankind. I could never discover why Mr Lincolns views of religion or on Christianity were so sedulously kept to himself. I Expected when I begun your last Lecture to find something on this subject. I discovered however that what you said about it had been purposely omited I do not see how it could hurt the world to know the truth about it. I Earnestly congratulate you upon the three best Efforts perhaps of your life. I would be hapy to honestly deserve the Just credit these honorable creations must bring to you — and I shall thank you If at any time you should reduce them to

some enduring form to favor me with a copy of them — for there is nothing in them which I cannot and ought not to frankly and cordially approve.

truly your friend — R. G. Oglesby
