My dear Sir:

My absence has delayed an answer to your letter of the 16th. My recollection is that it was the office of Secretary of the Interior which Hon. J.K. Dubois desired. But my Knowledge of the matter is all mere hearsay, as I never had any conversation either with Mr. Dubois or Mr. Lincoln on the subject.
