The reference may be to a speech Matheny was said to have made alleging that "renegade Democrats" reneged on an agreement to elect AL to the Senate in 1855, a speech cited by Stephen A. Douglas at the Jonesboro debate with AL, September 15, 1858 (CW 3:108 — 9).
