Burlington, Iowa, Oct. 20, 1866 My dear Sir Mr. Lincoln did visit Burlington in the Autumn of 1858 and spoke to a very large assembly of our people much to their satisfaction & delight. No man ever addressed an audience here who was abler to make such an impression upon them as Mr. Lincoln did on that occasion. He remained over Sunday at my house & started on Monday morning towards Quincy where he was to meet Mr. Douglas in debate, speaking however, if I remember right at two or three intermediate places. I have some letters of Mr. Lincolns but they are ordinary business letters and of no general interest to any one I am very truly Library of Congress: Herndon-Weik Collection. Manuscript Division.
