[1865 66] P. P. Enos Tells this as a fact. A man was making Some improvements about Mr Lincolns house: the thing to be done, Could not be fixed and Completed without Cutting down a pretty & valuable Shade tree in front of the house. The workman told Mrs L that the tree would have to Come down or the plan altered. "Cut the tree down," Said Mrs L'. The man did not want to do it went to See Mr L. and stated what would have to be done. Mr L Said "Have you seen Mrs L." "Yes was the reply" of the man " Then in God's name cut it down clean to the roots" Said Mr L'. Again (P.P.E. Says) Once while A. Y. Ellis was P.M,[ERROR: no link 2:2] L Came off the Circuit went to P.O after Eating his Supper read the letters Cracked jokes &c till about 11oc (Night time.) Lincoln Said all at once "Well I hate to go home."
