The place is not Wade Hamptons but was at Mdme Bushans Plantation about 6 M below Baton Rouche I was born in Spencer Co Ind. Lincoln worked & Clerked for Col Jones at Gentryville 15 M north of this place (Rockport) L drove a team cut up Pork & sold good for Jones Col Jones told me that Lincoln read all his books and I remember _______ History of the U.S. as one have forgotten all others and Even the name of that Jones often said to me that Lincoln would make a great man one of these days Had said so long before & to other people Said so as far back as 1828 9 Library of Congress: Herndon-Weik Collection.
