Caleb Carman — am 84 years — first new Lincoln in Sangamon Town in Sangamon Co in 1831. I used to go down to the river and play cards with Lincoln — he and Jno Johnston & Jno Hanks built a boat at Sangamon Town — lived in [shanty?] about 90 feet from the River — Sawed his [lumber?] at Broadwells mill in Sangamon Town — Mill up on the town — I next knew Lincoln in New Salem: he boarded with me in N Salem — He was engaged to Ann Rutledge — Lincoln was PM and kept it at my house — was Elected PM & kept it for him while in the legislature — Played cards — went to horse races — thru mauls — pitch quoits — wedges — & — All in 1831
