Wilson, Douglas L., ed.; Davis, Rodney O., ed.; Bateman, Newton. 'Newton Bateman (William H. Herndon Interview)' in 'Herndon's Informants: Letters, Interviews, and Statements About Abraham Lincoln' . Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1998. [format: book], [genre: interview]. Permission: University of Illinois Press
Note from page 436: 1. This is the only known text deriving from WHH's interviews with Bateman. In a letter to Isaac M. Arnold, WHH wrote: "I took down notes of Bateman's conversation, and showed them to him, after they were written out, and he confessed to their substantial correctness: they are dated the 3d12& 28 Dec. 1866 (see Lamon's L 496. Read my whole letter in Lamon 49297" (Dec. 27, 1882, CHS). The whereabouts of the originals of notes taken on these dates are not known. The text given here, because it is a Springer transcription, had to be based on earlier interviews. Note from page 436: 2. Springer first wrote Bissell, then struck this out and wrote Wood above it. William Bissell died in office and was succeeded by John Wood. Note from page 437: 3. Possibly W. J. Rankin, then U.S. senator from Mississippi. | |||
