256. Joseph H. Barrett to William H. Herndon.

Washington, D.C. October 1, 1866

Dear Sir:

Your letter of the 23d ult. was duly received. I can only reply to your inquiry that, with the exception of the authority specified in a foot note on page 14 (last edition) of my "Life" of Mr. Lincoln, my information was derived exclusively from Mr. L. himself (in relation to his ancestry.) [1] His statements were made to me orally, and I took notes as he went along.

Truly yours,
Jos. H. Barrett.
