Title: Letter from John Adams to Elbridge Gerry. General Washington has been chosen Comander-in-Chief, General Ward First Major-General, and General Lee Second, and Major Gates Adjutant-General. The virtuous attachment of our countrymen to their own officers presented an objection to the appointment of Lee and Gates, which was overcome by the earnest desire of General Washington to have their assistance.
