Winnebago Prophet
When he set out for Illinois' Rock River valley in the spring of 1832,
Chief Black Hawk believed that the Winnebago Prophet, a religious leader
of the Winnebago people, had promised him a place to live and farm at
the prophet's village near present-day Rockford. But Black Hawk's band
never made it to the Winnebago settlement to find out if they were welcome.
Pursued by Illinois militia and federal troops, the Sac and Fox fled across
northern Illinois and western Wisconsin before meeting a bloody fate at
the Battle of Bad Axe.
